Self Help, mobility and independence for young children Steps to Self Sufficiency provides a checklist of the myriad skills we all have to learn in order to become competent in mobility, self-care, such as dressing and washing, and independence. The checklist can be used as a guide to the level of a child's self sufficiency by both parents and professionals (nursery nurses, pre-school placement providers, infant teachers to name a few). This scheme is a way to gently guide a child and to recognise that when he or she is ready, we can help them to learn.
